The Hopper

I just wanna share this as I cannot get it out of my mind.

I had a conversation with a friend in my office about getting out of of something, or my company specifically. I told him that I was nervous, my hands felt wet, I got cold feet and I just can’t concentrate. That’s because I was afraid with my Boss’ reaction. So, my friend explained to me one example. It’s about something that hops, he cannot tell me what it was as he didn’t exactly know what to call it in English, we are both non-native English speakers. He said it’s green, so I told him to just imagine it as a grasshopper, as it’s what I thought based on his description. I know this is a fictional sample, but it makes sense.

He told me that one scientist saw a “grasshopper” hopping on an incredible distance. For example, it hops 4 meters each time it hops. The scientist caught the hopper and put it in a 3 meter cage/ box. So the hopper was only hopping 3 meters for a period of time while inside the box. The scientist took the hopper out and it hopped. It was only hopping 3 meters each time it hoped.

The scientist took the hopper again and put it inside a 2 meter box. So the hopper was only hopping 3 meters for a period of time while inside the box. The scientist took the hopper out and it hopped. It was only hopping 2 meters each time it hoped.

Again, the scientist took the hopper and put it inside a 1 meter box. So the hopper was only hopping 1 meter for a period of time while inside the box. The scientist took the hopper out and it hopped. It was only hopping 1 meter each time it hoped.

The scientist took the hopper again and put it inside a  smaller box. Every time the hopper is placed in a box with a specific size, the hopper gets out and hop as per the  size of the box he gets out of. Then the hopper was put inside a box as small or as big as a hopper that when the scientist took the hopper out, it only vibrated and didn’t hop at all.

Do you get the point here?

I got the point of my friend. That it’s okay to get out of my box, because if I stay in this box I might close my mind and won’t be able to do things I should be doing.
